As a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer with over 60 years in the Valley, we know this community’s hot weather and older homes inside and out.

What Is a Ductless Mini Split System?

A “normal” air conditioner in the Los Angeles area is called a split direct expansion (or split DX) system. It’s split into two main components: an outdoor condenser and an indoor evaporator. Most Southern California split systems produce 3 – 5 tons of cooling capacity. A mini split uses the same two components but can produce as little as 0.5 tons.

A single mini split is an excellent choice for a single room or converted space, like an add-on or renovated attic. There’s no ductwork required and no need to replace your existing system.

Larger, multi-zone mini splits are an option for whole-home comfort. Multi-zone mini splits connect one larger outdoor unit to multiple indoor units. The outdoor unit produces up to 6 tons of cooling, while each indoor unit handles its own zone. This gives every area of your home separate temperature control and dramatically improves comfort and efficiency.

And yes, ductless mini splits skip the ductwork entirely. Instead of pushing cooled air through ducts, a mini split cools the air right inside the room that needs it. This improves efficiency and eliminates the need for an attic or crawl space to accommodate ductwork.

As a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer, MightyServ exclusively installs Carrier mini split systems, though our technicians are trained to repair and maintain a wide range of systems.

Signs Your Mini Split Needs Repair

  • Ice buildup on the indoor or outdoor unit
  • Blowing warm or weak air
  • Unusual noises like grinding, rattling, or clicking
  • Dirty filter causing reduced efficiency or shutdowns
  • Refrigerant leak (hissing sounds, warm air, oily residue near lines)
  • Unit is running constantly without reaching the set temperature
  • Water leaks or condensation dripping from the indoor unit
  • Error codes on the display panel or unresponsive controls

Whether you’re upgrading an older home without ductwork or adding a heating and cooling unit to a garage, guest room, or addition, ductless mini splits are a smart choice.

Our technicians help you select the right system in the right size for your space, install it with precision, and ensure it’s set up for optimal performance and zoned comfort. We install wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, and multi-zone systems, all backed by expert guidance and professional care. We’ll evaluate:

  • Room layout and square footage

Mini Split Repair: What’s Actually Wrong

Already have a mini split system that’s not cooling like it used to? Our team is experienced in diagnosing and repairing all major ductless brands. Refrigerant leaks, sensor issues, dirty filters, and airflow problems tend to be the most common culprits.

No matter the cause, we’ll give you an honest repair assessment or tell you when a replacement is the more cost-effective option. If the mini split is more than 10 – 15 years old, the fix is more expensive than a new unit, or the system is in poor condition, it’s likely time to replace. Because honesty and transparency are at the core of our business model, we’ll never suggest an unnecessary repair or replacement, or tack on surprise fees.

We offer same-day appointments and fully stocked service vehicles, so we can often complete your repair in a single visit.

Mini Split Maintenance: Protecting Your Investment

You should perform preventative maintenance on your mini split about once per year, though heavy-use systems could benefit from semi-annual maintenance.

The MightyServ’ Advantage Plan means we’ll do the hard work for you. In the spring and fall, we’ll inspect and clean your heating and cooling system, replace filters, tighten electrical connections, and more.

Even if you don’t choose to join the membership program, though, our technicians won’t leave without providing guidance on how to maintain the system on your own. From filter replacements to cleaning, we’ll explain how and how often to complete these essential maintenance tasks.

Why Choose a Ductless System Over Central Air?

Mini Splits Make Sense When:

  • Your home has no existing ductwork, or the ductwork is in poor condition
  • You’re adding square footage through room additions, garages, or ADUs

  • You want a combination heating and cooling solution

Central Air May Still Be the Right Call If:

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a ductless mini split air conditioner installed?

The installation process starts by mounting a bracket to an interior wall to properly secure the mini split unit. Then, the technician will move the outside condenser into place and drill a small hole through the wall to connect the inside and outside parts, through which they’ll pass the lineset, cables, and drain hose. The next step is to connect the tubing, make electrical connections, and position the drain line.

After installation, the technician will perform a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks and run a vacuum pump to remove any air or moisture, then open the refrigerant valves. Then, they’ll protect the unit with plastic or metal lineset covers so it avoids weather and sun damage. Finally, the technician will clean up any mess made during installation and leave your home as good as they found it.

How do I know if a ductless mini split system is properly sized for my home?

A professional technician performs a calculation of factors like square footage, windows, insulation, and climate to determine the proper-sized mini split. Signs the mini split isn’t sized correctly include short cycling, continuous running, uneven temperatures, unexpectedly high energy bills, and excessive wear and tear on the unit.

Can a ductless mini split replace central air conditioning?

Yes, absolutely. Ductless mini splits are a great alternative to central AC, though because they cool individual rooms, they’re often a better option for additions or smaller homes without existing ductwork.

What are the most common ductless mini split repair issues?

We often repair refrigerant leaks, clogged condensate drains, sensor issues, and motor failures in ductless mini split units. We also often see dirty filters resulting in blocked air. All of these issues can easily be fixed by a professional like MightyServ.

What causes ice buildup on a ductless mini split unit?

Usually, ice buildup means there’s an airflow issue, caused by dirty filters or blocked vents, or the refrigerant level is too low, sometimes because of a system leak. You can solve it by turning off the machine to let it thaw, cleaning the filters, and checking the refrigerant levels. If the ice comes back, it’s time to call a professional.

How do I know if my mini split has a refrigerant leak?

If your mini split has a refrigerant leak, it’ll often show signs like ice buildup, hissing sounds near the lines, or warm air blowing when it shouldn’t. A professional can confirm the leak using tools like leak detectors and pressure tests.

How often should I clean or replace my ductless mini split filter?

You should replace disposable filters every 1 to 3 months according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Reusable filters should be cleaned every 4 to 6 weeks, especially during times of peak usage.

Can a ductless mini split handle both heating and cooling?

Yes. Most Carrier mini splits are heat pumps, so they can both heat and cool. They’ll transfer heat out in the summer and absorb heat in the winter.

Do you offer ductless mini split installation and repair in the San Fernando Valley?

Yes! From our home base in Canoga Park, we provide ductless mini split services throughout the San Fernando Valley and greater Los Angeles area. We’ve served this community since 1963, so we know the Valley’s heating and cooling needs inside and out.
